Zoe Caldwell, a four-time Tony Award winner for her performances in Slapstick Tragedy, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, Medea, and Master Class, will speak at a celebration for New York City’s public school teachers to be held at Gallagher’s Steak House on Monday, March 3, 6-9pm.
As part of the event, which is being be presented by Theatre for a New Audience (TFANA), Caldwell will announce a new scholarship program for high school seniors, underwritten by The Richard and Mica Hadar Foundation. TFANA also sponsors the World Theatre Project as a way of introducing elementary and middle school students to the works of Shakespeare and other classics; and New Voices, a playwriting program for high school students.
In a statement, TFANA’s founder and artistic director Jeffrey Horowitz noted: “I got into theater because of my high school English teacher, who introduced me to T.S. Elliot, Edward Albee, and Giradoux. So often, an extraordinary teacher can change your life. This evening is about honoring what so many wonderful public school teachers do and achieve.” Caldwell agreed, stating: “Our city’s public school teachers are heroes.”
TFANA’s 24th season ends with Moliere’s Don Juan, set to open Off-Broadway at the Lucille Lortel Theatre (121 Christopher Street) on March 23. For more information, visit the website www.tfana.org.
