Sheldon Harnick will celebrate his birthday with the publication of his new book, The Outdoor Museum (Not Your Usual Images of New York, co-created with wife Margery Gray Harnick, at The Museum of the City of New York on April 30. He will read excerpts, accompanied by projections of his wife’s photographs.
The volume will be officially released from Beaufort Books on May 15. Featuring a foreword by Mike Nichols, it is inspired by the Harnicks’ love of museums and New York. Margery snapped pictures and Sheldon wrote verses on a pad to capture the very essence of the Big Apple with images such as puddle reflections, subway tiles, sleeping swans, fireworks, public sculpture, store mannequins, and more.
Additional events being held in conjunction with the book’s publication include an exhibition drawn from The Outdoor Museum at Guild Hall in East Hampton, NY, with a signing from 4pm to 6pm (May 5); a Rizzoli book signing, reception, and celebration on Mezzanine Level, 5:30pm-7pm (May 15); A book signing, slideshow, read-aloud, and reception at the Arsenal at Central Park as part of their Uncommon Ground Lecture Series, 5:30pm-7pm (June 20); and Sheldon and Margery Harnick presenting the images and verse in an invitation-only event in the art gallery at the 92nd Street Y, starting at 7:30pm.
