Reeve Carney, who stars as Peter Parker/Spider-Man in Broadway’s Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, has extended his contract with the production through May 2012.

As previously reported, Carney will be starring in Jake Scott’s upcoming untitled Jeff Buckley biopic, which films this winter. During that time, Carney will take a brief leave from the show, with his alternate Matthew James Thomas and cast member Matt Caplan assuming the lead role.

Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark is inspired by over 40 years of Marvel comic books. It follows the story of teenager Peter Parker, whose unremarkable life is turned upside-down when he’s bitten by a genetically altered spider and must learn that with great powers comes great responsibility.

The production features creative consultation by Philip William McKinley, original direction by Julie Taymor, music and lyrics by Bono and The Edge, and book co-written by Taymor, Glen Berger, and Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa.
