Mary Rodgers, who wrote the music for the classic Broadway musical Once Upon a Mattress and is the daughter of theater legend Richard Rodgers, was among the attendees at the opening of Ten Cents a Dance, which kicked off the McCarter Theatre’s season on Friday, September 16. John Doyle has directed the production, which will run through October 9.
The work is a co-production with Williamstown Theatre Festival where it recently completed a successful run, and is devised by Doyle utilizing the songbook of Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart.
The cast includes Diana DiMarzio, Malcolm Gets, Donna McKechnie, Jane Pfitsch, Elisa Winter, and Jessica Tyler Wright.
In Ten Cents A Dance, crooner Johnny wistfully recalls his lifelong love affair of chorus girl Miss Jones, who is embodied by five women, each portraying a different stage of her life. The show features such songs as “Manhattan,” “Blue Moon,” ,”Falling in Love with Love,” “Isn’t it Romantic?” and “The Lady is a Tramp.”
