Urban Cowboy, the new Broadway musical based on the movie that starred John Travolta and Debra Winger, is set to begin previews on February 27. In the central role of Bud, the sensational Matt Cavenaugh is lookin’ for love. Think he’ll find it?
During a presentation of several numbers from the show at 890 Broadway last week, it was obvious that casting a gorgeous guy with an amazing body and putting him in a skin-tight tank top is a good way to get the attention of the press.
Playing opposite Cavenaugh as Sissy, Jenn Colella has to initially seem unimpressed by his charms. Now, that’s acting!
John McDaniel — known to millions as Rosie O’Donnell’s musical sidekick — performed at Joe’s Pub this past weekend with special guest Eden Espinosa, who will be starring in Brooklyn (an upcoming Broadway show that McDaniel is producing).
After the show, McDaniel greeted Sam Arlen (son of the legendary Broadway composer Harold Arlen) and his wife, Joan.
Also on hand for John McD’s show: Carol Burnett and husband Brian Miller…
…Linda Lavin (who starred in Burnett’s Hollywood Arms) with TheaterMania’s own Jim Caruso…
…diva Betty Buckley…
…Susan Lucci, who played the title role in Annie Get Your Gun on Broadway under McDaniel’s musical direction…
…and Christine Ebersole (a Tony Award winner for 42nd Street), pictured here with Jay Wilkison (a new cast member of the daytime TV drama One Life to Live).
Broadway and TV star Sandy Duncan is pictured here with husband Don Correia and their son Jeff following Sing for a Cure: A Valentine Cabaret Salute to Richard Rodgers, a concert held on Monday, February 10 at the Richard Rodgers Theatre to benefit ZazAngels and the ALS Association. Duncan performed at the benefit…
…as did Lea Salonga, who is currently starring on Broadway in Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Flower Drum Song.
The Blizzard of 2003 couldn’t prevent Christopher Sieber (now appearing as Trevor Graydon in Thoroughly Modern Millie) and friends from celebrating Sieber’s birthday at a party hosted by Jim Caruso in the King Kong Room at The Supper Club last night. Here’s the birthday boy (r) with his partner, Kevin Burrows (most recently seen in South Pacific at Arena Stage in Washington, D.C.)
Also joining in the fun at Sieber’s party: Gavin Creel (Jimmy in Thoroughly Modern Millie) and Billy Porter (Grease!, Dreamgirls in Concert)….
…and Darren Ritchie (Creel’s understudy), pictured here with friend, actress Joy Soprano.
