At the Waldorf Astoria last evening, the Museum of Television & Radio honored old chums Julie Andrews and Carol Burnett for their television work. Here, the loverly Andrews poses for TheaterMania in the Grand Ballroom of the hotel prior to the start of the gala.
Reunited, and it feels so good: Seated at Burnett’s table for the event was Beverly Sills, retired diva and new chairman of the board of the Metropolitan Opera. The two ladies, pictured here, teamed up for a memorable TV special taped at the Met in 1976.
Another reunion: Catching up at the cocktail reception that began the evening were Michele Pawk, Linda Lavin, and Donna Lynne Champlin. The actresses co-starred on Broadway in Hollywood Arms, the play co-written by Carol Burnett and her late daughter Carrie Hamilton, based on Burnett’s memoir One More Time.
Also on hand for the gala: Tony Bennett, a singer for all seasons…
…the fabulous Chita Rivera, soon to be back on Broadway in the Roundabout Theatre Company’s production of Nine…
…Walter Cronkite, the legendary TV newsman…
…Mary Tyler Moore, who co-starred with Andrews in the film Thoroughly Modern Millie…
…and Mary Rodgers, composer of Burnett’s Broadway hit Once Upon a Mattress, pictured here with husband Henry Guettel.
The MT&R event was full of clips of Andrews and Burnett in performance, projected on a giant screen. Here are the ladies in a still photo of their first collaboration: a TV special taped at Carnegie Hall in 1962.
To cap the evening, Andrews and Burnett were introduced by Barbara Walters, and the ladies took the stage to a warm ovation.
