Michael McGrath to Star in Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival’s 1776

Tony Award nominee Michael McGrath will star as John Adams in the Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival production of 1776, June 17-July 5. Dennis Razze will direct.

The musical features music and lyrics by Sherman Edwards, with a book by Peter Stone. It follows founding fathers John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Richard Henry Lee, and Thomas Jefferson as they attempt to convince the members of the second Continental Congress to vote for independence.

The creative team will include Will Neuert (set), Sam Fleming (costumes), Eric Haugen (lighting), and Matt Given (sound).

McGrath received Tony and Drama Desk nominations for his performance in Monty Python’s Spamalot, and won a Theatre World Award for Swinging on a Star. Other Broadway credits include Little Me, Anything Goes, Wonderful Town, and Is He Dead.

The Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival summer season also includes The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) June 3 – June 28; A Midsummer Night’s Dream, July 8 – August 2; Antony and Cleopatra, July 15 – August 2; Cinderella, May 29 – August 1; Shakespeare for Kids, July 22 – August 1; and The Green Show, June 3 – August 1.
