Atlantic Theater Company has announced four of its six productions for its 2012-2013 season, which will include two world premieres and two New York premieres. The first three announced works will take place in the Linda Gross Theater Main Stage, following a two-year long, historic renovation of the space, with the fourth to be presented in the Atlantic Stage 2.
The season will kick off in the fall with the New York premiere of Simon Stephens’s Harper Regan, to be directed by Gaye Taylor Upchurch. In the piece, the titular character decides to walk away from her husband, her daughter and her home.
Also in the fall will be the world premiere of Melissa James Gibson’s What Rhymes With America, to be directed by Daniel Aukin. The work centers on a father and his teenaged daughter, examining estrangement and the partially examined life.
John Guare’s world premiere play, Three Kinds of Exile will debut in Winter 2012/Spring 2013, under Neil Pepe’s direction. The piece presents us with three artists, all of whom forged complicated lives in the West, having struggled and suffered amid the cultural and political turmoil of Eastern Europe in the mid-20th Century.
The season will conclude with the New York premiere of Rolin Jones’s The Jammer, at the Atlantic Stage 2 in the spring. This wild theatrical adventure about New York in the late 1950’s plunges us into the hard-boiled, bizarre world of professional roller derby.
