The Marriott Theatre has announced selections for its 2012 season.

Marc Robin will direct and choreograph Legally Blonde (January 18-April 1), written by Heather Hach with music and lyrics by Laurence O’Keefe and Nell Benjamin. Based on the MGM film of the same name, it follows sorority queen Elle Woods, who hits the books and sets out to win her boyfriend back by following him to Harvard Law School.

Next up will be Gilbert and Sullivan’s swashbuckling comedic opera, The Pirates of Penzance (April 4-June 10), which concerns pirate apprentice Frederic, and the fair maiden Mabel, who fall instantly in love, even though obstacles threaten to cause trouble for the couple.

Marriott Theatre will present the world premiere musical Hero (June 20-August 19), conceived and written by Aaron Thielen, with music and lyrics by Michael Mahler. In it, an aspiring comic book artist who suffered a long-ago tragedy is forced by unexpected events to finally face his fears and get his life on track.

Featuring music by Academy Award nominee Henry Krieger and lyrics and book by Tony and Grammy-winning Tom Eyen, Dreamgirls (August 22-November 4) is about an up-and-coming 1960s singing girl group, and the triumphs and tribulations that come with fame and fortune.

The season will conclude with My One and Only (November 7-January 13), featuring a score by George and Ira Gershwin and book by Peter Stone and Timothy S. Mayer. It’s the Jazz Age story of Captain Billy Buck Chandler, a barnstorming aviator, who falls in love with Edith Herbert, an ex-English Channel swimmer and the star of Prince Nicolai’s International Aquacade.
