Musical Theatre West has announced principal casting for Hairspray, to run October 28 – November 13 at the Carpenter Performing Arts Center. Larry Raben will direct the production, which will be choreographed by Lee Martino and have musical direction by Dennis Catellano.
Based on the classic film by John Waters, Hairspray features music by Marc Shaiman, lyrics by Scott Wittman and Shaiman and a book by Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan. Set in 1962 Baltimore, Maryland, the show centers on plump teenager Tracy Turnblad, whose dream is to dance on The Corny Collins Show, a local TV dance program. When Tracy wins a role on the show, she becomes a celebrity overnight and launches a campaign to integrate the show.
The company will feature Jim J. Bullock as Edna Turnblad, David Engel as Corny Collins, Todrick D. Hall as Seaweed, Derek Klena as Link, Tracy Lore as Velma Von Tussle, Barry Pearl as Wilbur Turnblad, Lauren Smolka as Amber Von Tussle, Gwen Stewart as Motormouth Maybelle, Eric Watkins as Penny, and Victoria Morgan as Tracy Turnblad.
