The Festival of New American Musicals (FNAM) is currently taking submissions for its new initiative, the 2012 Show Search, which looks for the next generation of Broadway musical composers.

Darren Criss, of Glee and Broadway fame, serves as FNAM spokesperson. FNAM’s First Annual National Search for the Best New Musical written by Young America is the first national competition for high school and college-age new musical theater writers.

Each entrant is asked to submit a 10-minute original musical, which will be judged on storytelling, musicality and originality. Submissions will be uploaded to YouTube with a final submission deadline of April 15. A select panel of musical theater professionals will review all submissions. There will be two groups of top 10 selected semi-finalists based on these age groups – one 13-18 years of age and one 18-25 years of age, and the public will vote for their favorites. Three finalists from each age category will be selected by a celebrity jury.

They will then be given the opportunity to have his/her musical performed in a live concert presentation in Los Angeles as part of FNAM’s New Musical Staged Reading Series, along with the opportunity to be mentored by a top Broadway composer.
