The Originalist, by John Strand, begins tonight at Arena Stage. At the story’s center is one of America’s most controversial Supreme Court Justices, Antonin Scalia. The play follows a young and promising law school graduate who becomes his clerk. In working for Justice Scalia, she finds both a sparring partner and, surprisingly, a mentor. The question becomes how their relationship will affect the important and often contentious cases over which Justice Scalia presides.

The play, directed by Molly Smith and written by John Strand, features Edward Gero as Scalia, Kerry Warren as his clerk Cat, and Harlan Work as Brad.

"[Antonin Scalia] has intrigued me for a long time because he's kind of a lightning rod," says author John Strand. "Half the country thinks of him as a monster and half thinks of him as a hero. I love to explore why that is. And how can you resist a character who's a brilliant jurist and also a showman at heart?"

The creative team includes Colin K. Bills (light design), Joseph P. Salasovich (costume design), Misha Kachman (set design), Eric Shimelonis (sound design), and Susan R. White (stage manager).

Performances will run through April 26.
