
The winners of the 2011 Barrymore Awards have been announced. The prizes were presented in a ceremony held on October 3 at the Walnut Street Theatre.
The Wilma Theatre’s production of Sarah Ruhl’s In the Next Room, or the vibrator play has received the most awards, earning a total of eight, including Outstanding Overall Production of a Play. The show also earned the Outstanding Ensemble in a Play Award as well as an individual prize for Krista Apple, who received the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Play Award and one for director Blanka Zizka.
The most highly honored musical is The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee from Theatre Horizon, which has won four awards, including one for director Matthew Decker, one for Outstanding Ensemble in a Musical, and ones for performers Michael Doherty and Rachel Camp. Arden Theatre Company’s The Flea and the Professor has received the Outstanding Overall Production of a Musical Award, and also earned an award for Rob McClure, who has won the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Musical Award.
Other honorees include Anna Deavere Smith who has won the Outstanding Leading Actress in a Play Award for Let Me Down Easy, as well as Melinda Chua and James Ijames, who has received both the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Play Award and the F. Otto Award for an Emerging Philadelphia Theatre Artist.
The ceremony also featured the presentation of the previously announced non-competitive awards to Terrence McNally, Harry Dietzler, and Otis D. Hackney III.
