Adam Shankman to Direct Film Version of Rock of Ages; Produce 2010 Oscars

Adam Shankman, who directed the film version of Hairspray, will helm the film adaptation of the Broadway musical Rock of Ages, according to Variety. No casting has been announced.

In additional news, Shankman will produce the 2010 Academy Awards with Bill Mechanix.

Rock of Ages focuses on a young rocker hungry for his big break and a small town girl who meet in 1987 at a legendary Hollywood club facing its imminent demise. The score includes the hit songs of iconic rockers Journey, Styx, REO Speedwagon, Foreigner, Pat Benatar, Whitesnake, and many more. The musical’s book is written by Chris D’Arenzio, who will also pen the screenplay

As previously reported, a sit-down production of Rock Ages at Toronto’s Royal Alexandra Theatre is expected to launch in May 2010. The production will be directed by Kristin Hanggi, who also helmed the show’s current Broadway production. Casting will be announced at a later date.
