New York City Center was aglow last night as a host of stars gathered for
The Public Sings: A 50th Anniversary Celebration, featuring songs from the many musicals that have been presented by The Public Theater over the decades. Among the performers were Meryl Streep, Mike Nichols, Betty Buckley, Donna Murphy, Marc Kudisch, George C. Wolfe, Chuck Cooper, Norm Lewis, Elaine Stritch, and a host of others pictured below at the after-party, which was held at the Time Warner Center.

Seen here in an affectionate moment together are Eartha Kitt, who starred in the Public Theater’s Broadway production of Michael John LaChiusa’s The Wild Party, and Rosie Perez, one of several participants in the concert who proved that they couldn’t “Sing” by tackling that number from the epoch-making Marvin Hamlisch-Edward Kleban-Nicholas Dante-James Kirkwood-Michael Bennett musical A Chorus Line.
Also on hand: Idina Menzel, who starred in the Public’s recent production of LaChiusa’s See What I Wanna See…
…the gorgeous Natalie Portman, who gave a charming rendition of “Frank Mills” from the Galt MacDermot-James Rado-Gerome Ragni musical Hair…
…hunky Cheyenne Jackson, who also shone in the Hair sequence of the concert…
…the one and only Lillias White, who sang a selection from Adam Guettel’s Saturn Returns…
…Zach Braff, another of the evening’s “Sing”-ers…
…Ben Stiller, who also demonstrated that he can’t carry a tune in a bucket…
…Daphne Rubin-Vega, who did a terrific job with “Good Morning Starshine” and “Easy to Be Hard” from Hair…
…Billy Porter, who offered a song from William Finn’s Romance in Hard Times…
…and Cynthia Nixon, who gave a hilarious performance of “Dance: Ten; Looks: Three” from A Chorus Line.
