Whoopi Goldberg to Be Honored at Artios Awards

Whoopi Goldberg will receive the New York Apple Award at the 27th annual Artios Awards, to be held on September 26. Presented by The Casting Society of America, the bi-coastal award ceremonies will be held simultaneously at the The Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles and at District 36 in New York.

The New York Apple Award is given in recognition from the casting community to an individual who has made a special commitment to the New York entertainment industry through collaboration with casting directors. Goldberg will receive her award at the New York ceremony. At the Los Angeles ceremony, honorees will include Dick Wolf, who will receive the Career Achievement Award, and Meg Liberman, who will be given the Hoyt Bowers Award.

In addition, nominations in competitive categories have been announced. The awards are given on the criteria of originality, creativity and contribution of casting to the overall quality of a project. The term “Artios” is from the ancient Greek word meaning “perfectly fitted.”

Broadway productions that have been nominated include Anything Goes, Arcadia, The Book of Mormon, Catch Me If You Can, A Free Man of Color, Good People, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, Jerusalem, La Bete, Lombardi, Mrs. Warren’s Profession, The Normal Heart, That Championship Season, War Horse, and Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown.

Other New York City shows included in nominations are The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Angels in America, By the Way, Meet Vera Stark, The Grand Manner, Hairspray, The Hallway Trilogy, Other Desert Cities, School for Lies, Three Sisters, and Tigers Be Still.

Nominated productions for Regional Theatre East include A Delicate Balance, Antony and Cleopatra, Every Tongue Confess, Follies, and Ruined. Regional Theatre West nominees include August: Osage County, Circle Mirror Transformation, Leap of Faith, Little Miss Sunshine, and Tales of the City.

Los Angeles Theatre nominees include The Cradle Will Rock, Gigi, Kiss Me, Kate, Much Ado About Nothing, and The Temperamentals.
