New York City Opera Reaches Agreements with Unions

New York City Opera has reached tentative agreements with the American Guild of Musical Artists and Local 802 of the American Federation of Musicians, and will begin rehearsals immediately, according to The New York Times.

The agreements, which must still be ratified by the unions’ memberships, follow a prolonged negotiation period, which had cast the future of the opera company — or at least its current season — in doubt. Among the disclosed details of the agreement are deals relating to health insurance and the creation of a labor-management committee.

NYCO’s spring season will begin with Verdi’s La traviata, to be directed by Jonathan Miller at the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Howard Gilman Opera House beginning February 12. It will be followed by Rufus Wainwright’s first opera, Prima Donna, also at the Howard Gilman Opera House, beginning February 19.

The season also includes Così fan tutte at the Gerald W. Lynch Theater at John Jay College beginning March 18, and Georg Philipp Telemann’s Orpheus at El Teatro del Museo del Barrio, beginning May 12.
