Zeitgeist to Showcase New Playwrights from Austria, Germany, and Switzerland
The international new play festival Zeitgeist is set to present the work of new playwrights from Austria, Germany, and Switzerland in staged readings with leading directors in Washington and New York.
Participating theaters include Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater, Studio Theatre, and the Shakespeare Theatre Company in Washington, and New York Theatre Workshop, Playwrights Horizons, and Soho Rep in New York City.
The play and schedules will include German playwrights Nurkan Erpulat and Jens Hillje’s Crazy Blood (June 11 and 14 at Goethe-Institut Washington), about young second and third generation German-Turks. Ameneh Bordi will direct the June 11 production, and Jade King Carroll will direct the June 14 production.
Next will be Swiss playwright Reto Finger’s Cold Country (June 18 and 24 at Goethe-Institut Washington), the open secret in Hannah’s family about the death of her brother. The June 18 production will be directed by Serge Seiden, and a director from Playwrights Horizons will direct the play on June 24).
Austrian playwright Thomas Arzt’s play about the annual midsummer-nights party thrown by employees at a local company Chirping Hill (June 25 at the Embassy of Austria and June 28 at Goethe-Institut New York) will be the festival’s final production. Jenny Lord will direct on June 25, and Jeremy Bloom will direct the production on the 28.
