Viola Davis, Scarlett Johansson, Denzel Washington, Catherine Zeta-Jones, et al. Win Tony Awards

The winners of the 2010 Tony Awards have been announced in a ceremony held at Radio City Music Hall, hosted by Sean Hayes.

John Logan’s Red won six awards, including Best Play, Best Director of a Play for Michael Grandage, Best Featured Actor in a Play for Eddie Redmayne, and three design awards.

The award for Best Musical has gone to Memphis, which also earned awards for Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score Written for the Theater, and Best Orchestrations.

In revival categories, August Wilson’s Fences won as Best Revival of a Play as well as awards for leading actors Denzel Washington and Viola Davis. La Cage Aux Folles won as Best Revival of a Musical and also won awards for director Terry Johnson and for Douglas Hodge, who won as Best Leading Actor in a Musical.

This yeat’s other Tony Award-winning actors are Katie Finneran for Promises, Promises, Scarlett Johansson for A View from the Bridge, Levi Kreis for Million Dollar Quartet, and Catherine Zeta-Jones for A Little Night Music.

Fela! won awards for Bill T. Jones’ choreography, Robert Kaplowitz’s sound design, and Marina Draghici’s costume design, while American Idiot won for Christine Jones’ set design and Kevin Adams’ lighting design. Catherine Zuber won her fifth Tony for costume design for The Royal Family.

The winners of non-competitive Tony Awards for 2010 include The Eugene O’Neill Theater Center in Waterford, Connecticut, which received the 2010 Regional Theatre Tony Award. The 2010 Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement was presented to playwright and director Sir Alan Ayckbourn and Tony Award- winning actress Marian Seldes. The Isabelle Stevenson Award was presented to Tony Award-winning actor David Hyde Pierce for his charity work.

The 2010 Tony Honors for Excellence were presented to the Alliance of Resident Theatres/New York, B.H. Barry, Tom Viola, and a special award was given to the Midtown North and Midtown South police precincts.
