Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike Extends to July 28

Christopher Durang’s Tony Award-nominated show will play an extra month.

The most Tony-nominated cast on Broadway (four out of six actors) will play on. Christopher Durang’s Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike has extended its run at the John Golden Theatre through July 28. It was originally scheduled to close June 30.

“I wanted the show to do well and it’s done extremely well,” said director Nicholas Martin upon hearing the news of his Tony nomination for the show. Indeed, in addition to racking up six Tony nods, Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike has also been doing healthy business at the box office: It pulled in $489,914 last week, charging an average ticket price of $95.22.

A comic variation on Chekhovian themes, Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike is about Vanya (Tony Award nominee David Hyde Pierce) and his sister Sonia (Tony Award nominee Kristine Nielsen), who still live in their childhood home. When their glamorous movie-star sister Masha (played by glamorous movie star Sigourney Weaver) returns home with her new beau-hunk Spike (Tony Award nominee Billy Magnussen), their quotidian lives are thrown into disarray. The cast also features Genevieve Angelson as youthful visitor Nina and Tony Award nominee Shalita Grant as a clairvoyant cleaning lady.

The creative team features David Korins (scenic design), Emily Rebholz (costume design), Justin Townsend (lighting design), and Mark Bennett (original music and sound design).

Originally produced at the McCarter Theatre Center in New Jersey, it opened in New York at the Lincoln Center’s Mitzi Newhouse Theatre on November 12, 2012. It transferred to Broadway for a limited run starting March 5. Joey Parnes, Larry Hirschhorn, and John O’Boyle produced the transfer in association with the McCarter Theatre and Lincoln Center Theater.
