UPDATED: Before it hits Broadway next spring, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical will have its world premiere at San Francisco's SHN Curran Theatre, from September 24-October 20. Marc Bruni will direct the production.
March 15, 2013 - Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, a new tuner about the life and career of singer/songwriter Carole King, has announced that it will begin performances on Broadway in spring 2014. The production will also play a fall 2013 pre-Broadway engagement.
Beautiful: The Carole King Musical features songs written by Gerry Goffin and Carole King, as well as numbers by and Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil. The show features a book by Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Douglas McGrath (Bullets Over Broadway). It tells the story of Carole Klein, long before she was musical legend Carole King, who fought her way into the record business and married the man of her dreams only to find her voice when her perfect life began to crack.
"What's so great about this for me is that musicals were a major influence on my songwriting," said King in a statement. "In fact, when Gerry and I first met, we made a bargain that I would write music for the Broadway show he wanted to create if he wrote lyrics for my rock-'n'-roll songs."
Casting and creative team for Beautiful: The Carole King Musical will be announced at a later date.
