Broadway stars welcomed Mayor Bill de Blasio with open arms during his inauguration ceremony held at City Hall at noon on New Year's Day. Former President Bill Clinton presided over the event, following the private ceremony that took place earlier that morning outside de Blasio's Brooklyn home.

Tony Award winner Cynthia Nixon (Wit, Sex and the City) — an advocate for city schools and a member of de Blasio's transition team — was among the afternoon's speakers. "It's an exciting time for New York," the actress commented, "as we inaugurate a new mayor who will stand up for our public schools and ensure an opportunity for children in every borough and in every neighborhood." Nixon then introduced her fellow Broadway alum, Tony Award winner Patina Miller (Pippin), who, accompanied on guitar, sang John Lennon's "Imagine" for the chilly crowd.
