Tony Award Winner Philip Rose Has Died

Tony Award-winning producer, director, and writer Philip Rose has died at age 89, according to The New York Times.


Rose won a Tony Award for co-authoring the 1975 musical Shenandoah, which he also produced and directed. He also received Tony nominations for producing A Raisin in the Sun and for both producing and directing the musical Purlie. He had produced the Broadway play, Purlie Victorious, which served as the basis for the musical.


His many other Broadway credits include The Owl and the Pussycat, Bravo Giovanni, Does a Tiger Wear a Necktie?, Comin’ Uptown, Amen Corner, and Checkmates.


He is survived by his wife, actress Doris Belack, his brother, Jack Rosenberg, and his sisters, Sylvia Smolkin, Pearl Yabroff, and Rose Diamond.
