The Producers to be Featured on Curb Your Enthusiasm

According to a production source, the Broadway production of The Producers will be featured on the season finale of the HBO comedy series Curb Your Enthusiasm. Filming of the segment is taking place today in and around the St. James Theatre, where the Mel Brooks musical is playing.

Created by Larry David, one of the creators of Seinfeld, HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm is an improvised series that stars David as himself. Apparently, the plot of the season finale is that he and David Schwimmer, one of NBC-TV’s Friends, are taking over the leading roles of Max Bialystock and Leo Bloom in The Producers. (In reality, as opposed to “reality TV,” the show is now headlined by Lewis J. Stadlen and Don Stephenson.)

Based on the popular Mel Brooks film that starred Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder, the stage version of The Producers has music and lyrics by Brooks, who co-wrote the book for the show with Thomas Meehan. The production was directed and choreographed by Susan Stroman.
