The Lion King to Become Eighth Longest Running Show in Broadway History logo

The hit musical The Lion King, currently performing at the Minskoff Theatre, will become the eighth longest running Broadway show of all time on Sunday, February 21 when it plays its 5,125th performance, surpassing the record previously held by Jonathan Larson's musical, Rent.

Based on the 1994 Disney animated film, The Lion King is directed by Julie Taymor, and opened on Broadway on November 13, 1997 at the New Amsterdam Theatre. The show transferred to its current home at the Minskoff on June 13, 2006.

The principal cast currently features James Brown-Orleans (Banzai), Ta'Rea Campbell (Nala), Bonita J. Hamilton (Shenzi), Tshidi Manye (Rafiki), Cameron Pow (Zazu), Tom Alan Robbins (Pumbaa), Danny Rutigliano (Timon), Enrique Seguar (Ed), Derek Smith (Scar), Nathaniel Stampley (Mufasa), and Dashaun Young (Simba). The role of Young Simba is alternated between Alphonso Romero Jones II and Marquis Kofi Rodriguez, and the role of Young Nala is alternated between Shereen Pimentel and Shannon Skye Tavarez.
