The Broadway Revival of Sophie Treadwell's Machinal Opens on Broadway Tonight
Golden Globe nominee Rebecca Hall stars in this landmark expressionist play based on the execution of Ruth Snyder.
The first Broadway revival of Machinal, Sophie Treadwell's expressionist play based on the 1927 murder trial and electric-chair execution of housewife Ruth Snyder, opens tonight at the American Airlines Theatre. The production stars Golden Globe nominee Rebecca Hall in her Broadway debut and also features Suzanne Bertish, Michael Cumpsty, and Morgan Spector. Lyndsey Turner directs.
Machinal was first produced on Broadway in 1928, the year after the trial on which it is based. In it, Hall plays a housewife unfulfilled by marriage and motherhood who embarks on an illicit love affair and is later convicted of murdering her husband.
