Susanna Phillips Wins Fifth Annual Beverly Sills Artist Award

Soprano Susanna Phillips has been named the recipient of the fifth annual Beverly Sills Artist Award for young singers at the Metropolitan Opera. The $50,000 award, the largest of its kind in the United States, is designated for extraordinarily gifted singers between the ages of 25 and 40 who have already appeared in featured solo roles at the Met. Phillips received the prize in a ceremony at the Met on April 21.

Phillips made her Met debut last season as Musetta in La Bohème. She returned this season to play Pamina in Julie Taymor’s production of Die Zauberflöte, a role which she will repeat during the 2010-2011 season. Phillips made her New York solo recital debut in November, 2009 at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall as recipient of the 2009 Alice Tully Vocal Arts Debut Award. In addition to the Lyric Opera of Chicago, and Santa Fe, she has sung leading roles with the Dallas Opera, Stockholm Philharmonic, Mostly Mozart Festival, and at Carnegie Hall with the Marilyn Horne Foundation and the Oratorio Society of New York.
