The New York Post‘s “Page Six” reported this morning that writer-performer Spalding Gray has checked into a mental hospital following an attempt to jump off of a bridge near his home in the Hamptons. Gray is said to have been severely depressed since June 2001, when he was injured in a head-on car crash while visiting Ireland.

The famously neurotic monologuist, whose works include Swimming to Cambodia and Morning, Noon, and Night, was scheduled to start performances of his latest one-man show, Black Spot, this coming Monday, October 7, at P.S. 122 in Manhattan. But the show’s press representative confirmed that the run, which would have continued until December 16, has now been canceled entirely.

Black Spot — described as a work-in-progress — is about Gray’s traumatic car wreck, the subsequent operations that he had to go through, and his observations on Irish culture, socialized medicine, and the events of September 11.
