Sandra Bernhard, Ruben Blades, Nona Hendryx, Melvin Van Peebles, et al. Set for Lincoln Center Out of Doors

An updated list of offerings for Lincoln Center Out of Doors (LCOOD), a series of music and dance events that will run July 28-August 15, has been announced.

As previously announced, the series will open with a performance by the post-classical string quartet ETHEL, performing ETHEL Fair: The Songwriters, which will feature music by Adam Schlesinger, Dayna Kurtz, Juana Molina, and Tom Verlaine.

During a two-day Roots of American Music series (July 31-August 1), LCOOD will include appearances by comedian Sandra Bernhard, singer David Johansen, Melvin Van Peebles performing Shel Silverstein’s Hamlet: The Street Chant, neo-vaudevillians Asylum Street Spankers, as well as homages to Lenny Bruce and Lord Buckley.

Other highlights of the festival will include Nona Hendryx offering a retrospective of her career (July 30), the world premiere of Christine Southworth’s Super Collider (August 13), to be performed by the Kronos Quartet and 14 musicians of Gamelan Galak Tika; and an appearance by Ruben Blades and Adonis Puentes in Larry Harlow’s 1977 orchestral opus La Raza Latina, a Salsa Suite (August 14).

Among the dance companies performing are Nicholas Leichter Dance with Monstah Black which will perform THE WHIZ: Over the Rainbow (July 30), a remix and mash-up of the movie Wizard of Oz and the hit musical; and the Paul Taylor Dance Company which will offer performances on August 5 and 15.
