Repertorio Español Announces 2012-2013 Season

Repertorio Español has announced plans for its 45th season, running September 2012-August 2013.

Kicking off the season will be the world premiere of Caridad Svich’s adaptation of Gabriel García Márquez’ novel Love in the Time of Cholera (beginning October 15), directed by José Zayas. Next, the theater will present Suite Hispania’s “Xavier Montsalvatge: A Celebration in Music and Dance” (beginning November 16), which will include four musicians under the direction of Ignacio Prego and flamenco dance by Nélida Tirado. Yoshvani Medina will direct Saulo García’s one-man show Free Admission (beginning December 15), which centers on the role of lies and liars in our society.

2012 will come to a close with Bésame mucho: Latinas Sing Latinas: an anthology of songs by Latin American women (beginning December 21), with tunes by Sylvia Rexach, María Grever and Consuelo Velázquez, Ernestina Lecuona, Chabuca Granda, and Eladia Blázquez and María Elena Walsh, among others, with direction by Pablo Zinger. Then, Julián Mesri will direct Felix Lope de Vega’s Fuenteovejuna (beginning February 1), a story based on actual historical events that occurred when an entire village took justice into their hands by murdering the village’s cruel ruler. Closing the season will be the world premiere of Vincent Toro’s 21 (beginning May 13), a slice of modern American life from the perspective of a Puerto Rican family, directed by José Zayas.

In addition to these new productions, Repertorio will continue to present plays from its repertory, which includes classics and contemporary plays from Latin America, the United States and Spain such as Federico García Lorca’s The House of Bernarda Alba, directed by René Buch; Gabriel García Márquez’s Chronicle of a Death Foretold, directed by Jorge Alí Triana; Jorge Amado’s Doña Flor and Her Two Husbands, directed by Jorge Alí Triana; Carmen Rivera’s La gringa, directed by René Buch; and many more.
