Renée Elise Goldsberry (Good People) is set to star in the 1970s musical I’m Getting My Act Together and Taking It on the Road for the final Encores! Off-Center presentation of the 2013 season. The production will play five performances July 24-27. Direction and choreography will be by Kathleen Marshall (Nice Work if You Can Get It), with music direction by Chris Fenwick.

I’m Getting My Act Together and Taking It on the Road features a book and lyrics by Gretchen Cryer and music by Nancy Ford. It follows a former pop star who ditches the romantic songs of her past and attempts a comeback by performing personal songs that reflect women’s changing roles and attitudes. When first performed in the 1970s, the show stoked the fires of feminism because of both its message and its female songwriting team.

Renée Elise Goldsberry originated the role of Nettie in Broadway’s The Color Purple. She has also appeared in The Lion King, David Lindsay-Abaire’s Good People, and Two Gentlemen of Verona with Shakespeare in the Park. Her television credits include Ally McBeal, One Life to Live, and The Good Wife.

Encores! Off-Center is City Center’s newest series featuring seminal Off-Broadway musicals filtered through the lens of today’s most innovative artists.
