Quiara Alegría Hudes, Kevin Puts Among 2012 Pulitzer Prize Winners

Winners of the 2012 Pulitzer Prizes have been announced.

Quiara Alegría Hudes has been named as the recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for her play, Water by the Spoonful, which premiered at Hartford Stage in October 2011. The work is about the search for meaning by a returning Iraq war veteran working in a sandwich shop in his hometown of Philadelphia. The award comes with a $10,000 prize. Hudes was a previous Pulitzer finalist for Elliot, A Soldier’s Fugue, and is perhaps best known as the book writer for the musical, In the Heights, which was also a Pulitzer finalist.

Finalists in the Drama category included Jon Robin Baitz’s Other Desert Cities, currently on Broadway at the Booth Theatre, and Stephen Karam’s Sons of the Prophet, which played Off-Broadway earlier this season.

The Pulitzer Prize in Music has been awarded to Kevin Puts for Silent Night: Opera in Two Acts, commissioned and premiered by the Minnesota Opera in Minneapolis. The piece, featuring a libretto by Mark Campbell, recounts the true story of a spontaneous cease-fire among Scottish, French and Germans during World War I.

Finalists in this category included Tod Machover for Death and the Powers, premiered by the Boston Modern Opera Project and featuring a libretto by Robert Pinsky, and Andrew Norman for The Companion Guide to Rome.
