Denzel Washington, Marian Seldes, and Tony Kushner were among the presenters at The New York Drama Critics’ Circle Awards, which were given out at a private cocktail reception on Monday, May 10 at the Algonquin Hotel.
The Orphans’ Home Cycle, written by Horton Foote, won the award for Best Play of the 2009-2010 season. In attendance were several of the play’s cast, including star Bill Heck and the playwright’s daughter, Hallie Foote, who played multiple roles in the show. James Houghton, Founding Artistic Director of Signature Theatre Company, which presented the show in New York, was also in attendance.
Special awards were given to Lincoln Center Festival for visionary international programming and Viola Davis for sustained achievement. Davis is currently starring on Broadway in Fences, and was joined at the ceremony by several of her cast mates including Washington and Stephen McKinley Henderson.
In addition, an Emerging Artist Special Citation was awarded to Annie Baker for Circle Mirror Transformation and The Aliens. On hand to congratulate her was Tim Sanford, the Artistic Director of Playwrights Horizons, which presented Baker’s Circle Mirror Transformation.
