Is anyone in the American theater more beloved than Julie Harris? The five-time Tony Award winner was honored on Monday night by Primary Stages at the company’s 22nd anniversary gala benefit at Tavern on the Green.
Among the many celebrities who came out to salute Harris were two other great ladies of stage and screen, Ruby Dee and Tyne Daly…
…the ever-vital Eli Wallach…
…and his wonderful wife, Anne Jackson…
… the multi-talented Charles Grodin…
…and handsome Maxwell Cauflfield, currently starring Off-Broadway in My Deah.
New World Stages was another place to be on Monday night, as two major events happened there. The first was the opening of the musical Mimi Le Duck starring the ageless Eartha Kitt and the divine Annie Golden.
Also at New World Stages, Michael Hunsaker, Zachary Allen, and Colin Hanlon respectively played Marvin, Jason, and Whizzer in a special concert performance of Falsettoland to benefit Miracle House.
Meanwhile, at Birdland, cellist Peter Sachon (center) gave a concert featuring music written especially for him by Broadway composers, as well as several classical pieces. Afterwards, Sachon partied with guest singers Michael Winther (far left) and Kelli O’Hara (far right); Victoria Clark (second from left), who directed the concert and also sang; and Stephen Schwartz (second from right), who contributed music to the program.
On Sunday night, the big event was This is on Me: An Evening of Dorothy Parker, performed at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre to benefit The Acting Company. Here are the show’s stars: Boyd Gaines, Lynn Collins, Angela Lansbury, Harriet Harris, and Lisa Banes.
The audience was also full of stars, including Lansbury’s former Sweeney Todd co-star Len Cariou…
…television icon Barbara Walters…
…and Tony Award winner Bob Martin of The Drowsy Chaperone with his wife, Janet Van De Graaff.
Sunday also marked the official opening of the Culture Project’s aptly titled Speak Truth to Power, based on Kerry Kennedy’s book about the heroes of the international human rights movement. Each performance will boast special guest stars, such as Edie Falco and Brooke Shields, who appeared on Sunday.
Set to guest in the show on December 17 and 18 is the beautiful Julianna Margulies, last seen on Broadway in Festen.
