Broadway's longest-running musical The Phantom of the Opera has announced a special contest entitled Phantom: The Art of the Mask, inviting the show's fans to create original artwork on a template of the Phantom's legendary mask, originally designed by the late Tony Award-winning designer Maria Björnson.

Artists can register on the Phantom Facebook page and submit a two-dimensional design on the template of the mask provided by the production. Twenty-six winners (in honor of the production's record-breaking 26 years on Broadway) will then each have the chance to re-create their designs on a three-dimensional replica mask that will be sent out to them by the production. The 26 pieces will be displayed at a special Phantom Art Gallery and Pop-Up Shop at the Paramount Hotel at the end of October and five of the entries will be selected as Grand Prize winners by members of the cast and creative team in early October. The 26 finalists will be awarded a souvenir brochure of the musical and a winner's certificate, while the five Grand Prize winners will additionally receive a voucher for a pair of tickets to the show and a photo of their mask with cast members. All 26 masks will then be auctioned off to benefit Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.

Users can upload their submissions today through August 24. The 26 winning designs will be determined through the number of "likes" the submissions receive before the voting deadline of August 31. Winners will be announced the week of September 1.
