Orlando Bloom (The Lord of the Rings) and Tony Award nominee Condola Rashad (The Trip to Bountiful) will star in an upcoming Broadway revival of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, producers have announced. The production, to be directed by Tony nominee David Leveaux (Arcadia), will begin previews at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on August 24 in advance of a September 19 opening.

Bloom, who will make his Broadway debut, will star as Romeo to Rashad's Juliet. The multiracial production will costar Tony Award nominee Jayne Houdyshell (Dead Accounts) as Juliet's Nurse, with Joe Morton (The Good Wife) as Lord Capulet. Additional information is forthcoming.

Bloom made his professional stage debut in the 2007 West End production of the drama In Celebration. His many film credits include the the Lord of the Rings and Pirates of the Caribbean series, as well as Elizabethtown, Kingdom of Heaven, and Troy, among others. Rashad currently appears in the Broadway revival of Horton Foote's The Trip to Bountiful. She received a Tony Award nomination for her performance in Lydia R. Diamond's drama Stick Fly and a 2009 Theatre World Award for her work in Lynn Nottage's Ruined.

Romeo and Juliet was last seen on Broadway in 1986 in a production that played in repertory with As You Like It and Macbeth. In 2007, the Public Theater revived the romantic tragedy as part of their annual Shakespeare in the Park series, and held a benefit reading of the play in 2012 starring Meryl Streep and Kevin Kline. An off-Broadway revival, starring Elizabeth Olsen as Juliet, will be part of Classic Stage Company's upcoming 2013-2014 season.
