NYPL Presents The Juilliard School, 1905-2005: Celebrating 100 Years and Other Theater-Related Exhibitions

Acknowledging such alumni as Renée Fleming, Kevin Kline, Wynton Marsalis, and Paul Taylor, the exhibition documents Juilliard’s history with photographs, programs, posters, correspondence, and scores, many of which have never been on public view. In addition, exceptional performances and classes on audiotape and videotape are available for listening and viewing in the gallery.

Among the items on display are Frank Damrosch’s prospectus for an Institute of Musical Art that would keep serious American students of music from turning to Europe, along with textile merchant Augustus D. Juilliard’s will granting $15 million to help make the idea a reality. Photographs of a 1934 student production of Richard Strauss’s opera Ariadne auf Naxos, the master classes given by Maria Callas, and the now-famous graduates of the first Drama Division class are included.

In addition, the NYPL for the Performing Arts is currently housing two more theater-related exhibitions: I LA GALIGO: From the Sulawesi Epic to the Stage, now through October 2; and A Community of Artists: 50 Years of the Public Theater, now through October 15.
