Newsies, the Tony-winning musical with music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Jack Feldman, and a book by Harvey Fierstein, will play its final performance at Broadway’s Nederlander Theatre on August 24, prior to the launch of a national tour in October. Produced by Disney Theatrical Productions, Newsies is directed by Jeff Calhoun and choreographed by Tony Award winner Christopher Gattelli.

At the time of Newsies' closing, it will have played 1,005 Broadway performances.

Newsies is the recipient of eight 2012 Tony Award nominations, and is the winner of the Tony, Drama Desk, and Outer Critics Circle awards for its score and choreography.

Though intended only as a pilot production before the title was licensed for regional, professional, and amateur productions, Newsies' initial mounting at Paper Mill Playhouse in September 2011 transferred to Broadway following positive reception.

The current Broadway company of Newsies features Corey Cott as Jack Kelly, John Dossett as Joseph Pulitzer, Liana Hunt as Katherine Plumber, LaVon Fisher-Wilson as Medda Larkin, Ben Fankhauser as Davey, Andy Richardson as Crutchie, and Luca Padovan and Zachary Unger alternating the role of Les.

The ensemble of Newsies features Aaron J. Albano, Mark Aldrich, Giuseppe Bausilio, John E. Brady, Caitlyn Caughell, Julian DeGuzman, Michael Fatica, J.P. Ferreri, John Michael Fiumara, Damon J. Gillespie, David Guzman, Jacob Guzman, Nico James, Molly Jobe, Adam Kaplan, Evan Kasprzak, Stuart Marland, Tommy Martinez, Daniel Quadrino, Julie Reiber, Tom Alan Robbins, Jack Scott, Brendon Stimson, Nick Sullivan, Clay Thomson, Iain Young, and Stuart Zagnit.

Original cast member Tommy Bracco, currently back at Paper Mill for a production of Grease, will rejoin the cast later this month.

Newsies is inspired by the real-life newsboy strike of 1899, when a newsboy led a band of orphan and runaway newsies on a two-week-long action against Pulitzer, Hearst, and other powerful newspaper publishers.
