New York Public Library to Explore Life of Joan of Arc

The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts will host Warrior Saint: The Quest for the Dramatic Joan of Arc, a four-part series about the famed French peasant girl.

The series opens at 6pm on Thursday, April 2 with a lecture by author Siobhan Nash-Marshall, to be followed at 3pm on Saturday, April 11 with a panel discussion “Riddle of the Ages,” focusing on the depiction of Joan by William Shakespeare, Mark Twain, and George Bernard Shaw.

The series continues at 6pm on Monday, April 20 as the Magis Theatre Company reads scenes and commentary from such playwrights as Anouilh, Brecht, Schiller, Shakespeare, and Shaw, and it concludes at 12:30pm on Saturday, May 2 with screenings of Carl Theodor Dreyer’s 1928 silent film The Passions of Joan of Arc and Otto Preminger’s 1957 film Saint Joan, based on Shaw’s play.
