Nancy Opel to Return to Broadway’s Memphis February 12

Nancy Opel will once again play the role of Mama in the Broadway production of Memphis, at the Shubert Theate, on February 12. As previously reported, original Broadway cast member Cass Morgan has played the role while Opel took a leave of absence to appear in the Alley Theater production of The Toxic Avenger.

Opel received a Tony nomination for her performance in Urinetown, and won an Obie for My Deah. Previously, she received Drama Desk, Drama League, Outer Critics, and Lortel nominations for her role in the Off Broadway production of The Toxic Avenger.

Memphis takes place in the smoky halls and underground clubs of the segregated 50’s, where a young white DJ named Huey Calhoun (played by Adam Pascal) fell in love with everything he shouldn’t: rock and roll and an electrifying black singer (Montego Glover).

The musical won four 2010 Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Original Score (David Bryan and Joe DiPietro), Best Book (Joe DiPietro), and Best Orchestrations (David Bryan and Daryl Waters).
