Kate Mulgrew will replace Judith Ivey in Edward Albee's The American Dream and The Sandbox, which has been extended at the Cherry Lane Theatre until Saturday, May 3. (The extension was originally announced through May 17, but the production will now be closing earlier.) Ivey will leave the production following its originally announced closing date of April 19, and will be appearing in Northlight's The Lady With All the Answers, in May. Mulgrew's first performance will be April 22.

The American Dream tells a startling tale of murder and morality that rocks middle-class ethics to its complacent foundations. In The Sandbox, a middle-aged couple brings their grandmother to the beach one final time. Both works were originally produced at the Cherry Lane, in 1961 and 1962 respectively, and are part of the theater's Mainstage Heritage Series.

The cast also includes George Bartenieff (Daddy), Lois Markle (Grandma), Kathleen Butler (Mrs. Barker), Harmon Walsh (the American Dream), and Jesse Williams (the Angel of Death).

Mulgrew recently starred Off-Broadway in Iphigenia 2.0. Additional credits include Our Leading Lady and Tea at Five. She is best known for her television work, including Star Trek: Voyager and Ryan's Hope.
