MTC Run of The Rhythm Club Canceled

It has just been announced that The Rhythm Club, the new musical about young people in Nazi Germany whose lives are transformed by American swing music, will not be presented Off-Broadway later this season as originally planned.

Written by Jonathan Larson Performing Arts Foundation Award and Edward Kleban Award winners Chad Beguelin and Matthew Sklar, the musical had been scheduled to open this spring at Manhattan Theatre Club’s Stage I. But, according to a spokesman, “the show is not ready for production” and a replacement will be announced shortly.

The Rhythm Club had a developmental production at the Signature Theatre in Arlington, Virginia in 2000 and was originally slated for a 2001 Broadway engagement that never materialized. The director of the Signature production, Eric Schaeffer, was also expected to head the MTC production, which would have featured choreography by Jodi Moccia.
