They don’t call her “Marvelous Meryl” for nothing!

Academy Award winner and stage star Meryl Streep has donated $1 million to The Public Theater.

The gift, which was announced on Thursday night at a reception to celebrate the completion of the theater’s $40 million revitalization of its downtown home at Astor Place, was made in honor of Public Theater founder Joseph Papp and former Board member Nora Ephron, a close friend of the actress.

Streep has performed in numerous productions for the Public including Trelawny of the Wells, Henry V, The Seagull, and Mother Courage and Her Children. Most recently she appeared as part of The Public Theater’s 50th Anniversary Gala at the Delacorte Theater in a benefit reading of Romeo & Juliet opposite Kevin Kline.
