Memorial Service for Shubert Chairman Gerald Schoenfeld Set for February 9

A memorial service for Gerald Schoenfeld, who was chairman and chief executive officer of the Shubert Organization, will be held at 1pm on Monday, February 9 at the Majestic Theatre. There will be limited seats available to the public, on a first-come, first-served basis. Schoenfled died suddenly on November 25 in New York City at the age of 84.

Schoenfeld was a lawyer who joined the Shubert company, which now owns and runs 17 Broadway theaters, in 1950, and became the organization’s chairman in 1972. The organization has been an essential factor in many theatrical productions, including Passion, The Heidi Chronicles, Amy’s View, Passing Strange, and the current revival of Equus.

Schoenfeld also served as the chairman of the Mayor’s Midtown Citizens Committee. In 2004, the Plymouth Theatre was re-named in his honor. The lights of Broadway theaters will be dimmed at 7pm tonight in his memory.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Pat Schoenfeld, his daughter Carrie, his brother Irving, and two grandchildren. Funeral arrangements will be private with a memorial service to be held at a later date.
