On Thursday, April 26, a letter from the Mayor’s office was presented to Alan Menken and the cast of Leap Of Faith before the show’s opening night at the St. James Theatre. The letter read as follows:

Dear Friends:

It is a great pleasure to welcome everyone to the opening of Leap Of Faith.

To millions, New York City is synonymous with theater. The performing arts help define the character of our City, and make New York a destination for visitors from around the world. Last year, the pull of Broadway helped draw a record 50 million visitors to our great City, and we’re glad to celebrate the individuals whose efforts continue to make the Great White Way such a perennial attraction. Tonight’s performance gives us the opportuniry to recognize the work of Alan Menken, whose musical scores have garnered significant critical acclaim. Menken’s scores have been the backbone of many animated film classics (including The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin), and with the opening of Leap of Faith, he’s poised to take over Broadway too — between Leap of Faith, Sister Act, and Newsies, Menken is resonsible for the scores of three of the most prominent shows playing on Broadway today. We’re always pleased to commend those who make our cultural life richer and more vibrant, and we’re glad to congratulate the cast and crew of this terrific production as it begins its inaugural run.

On Behalf of the City of New York, please accept my best wishes for a roof-raising good time and continued success!

Sincerely,

Michael R. Bloomberg
