Abingdon Theatre Company will present a one-night benefit reading of Orson Welles' War of the Worlds on October 24 at NYU Skirball Center for the Performing Arts. Abingdon artistic director Tony Speciale will helm the reading.

The event's cast will feature Mario Cantone (Laugh Whore), David Greenspan (The Royal Family), Martin Moran (Spamalot), Stark Sands (Kinky Boots), and Michael Urie (How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying). Additional company members and musical guest stars are to be announced.

The story of Orson Welles’ first radio presentation of H.G. Wells' War of the Worlds is described as having thrown "America into nationwide hysteria when broadcast on the eve of Halloween, 1938," when, many listeners "mistakenly took the show for a real news broadcast, and believed that Martians were invading New York City."

Abingdon Theatre Company is dedicated to developing and producing new American plays by emerging and established playwrights. Under the artistic direction of Tony Speciale, the company aims to provide a safe home where playwrights, directors, and actors can collaborate.
