Marin Mazzie and Jason Danieley, who are married in real life, will take over the lead roles of the dysfunctionally married fictional couple Diana and Dan Goodman in the Broadway production of Next to Normal, beginning July 19. They will replace Alice Ripley and Brian d’Arcy James, respectively, who as previously announced, will play their final performance in the Broadway production on July 18.

Mazzie is a three-time Tony Award nominee for Kiss Me, Kate, Ragtime, and Passion, and most recently appeared on Broadway in Enron. Danieley’s theater credits include Curtains, The Full Monty and Candide on Broadway.

The couple have performed numerous cabaret gigs together, and are featured together on the album Opposite You. The last theater production they appeared in together was Off-Broadway’s The Trojan Women: A Love Story in 1996. Next to Normal will mark the first time the married couple will appear together in a Broadway musical.

The musical, written by Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey and directed by Michael Greif, addresses issues of mental illness and a suburban family’s efforts to cope with loss. It was recently awarded the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and also received three Tony Awards.

The current Broadway cast also features Kyle Dean Massey, Jennifer Damiano, Adam Chanler-Berat, and Louis Hobson.
