La MaMa E.T.C. to Offer April 25 A Prayer for Japan Benefit

An initial slate of performers and offerings has been announced for A Prayer For Japan, a special benefit performance to raise funds for relief efforts in Japan to be held on Monday, April 25, at 7:30pm at La MaMa’s Ellen Stewart Theatre.


The evening’s events will include spiritual prayers and chants to Mother Earth, and hope for the victims of the Tohoku region, where the earthquake hit, specifically, a Shinto Ritual By The International Shinto Foundation; a performance by the Filipino dance-theater ensemble Kinding Sindaw; “Matou”, an honor song of tribute to those who have passed offered by Ataahua Papa, Tiokasin Ghosthorse, Charley Buckland and Donna Kelly; and a performance by The Silver Cloud Dancers & Singers. In addition, pieces by singer Emi Toko and Vicky Holt Takamine will be offered on video.

Donations collected at the event will be given to “Make The Heaven,” which transports supplies to the disaster area and delivers these needed supplies directly to victims. In addition, the group places victims with volunteers across the country; and transports aid workers to the affected areas for rescue missions.

No reservations are required and admission is free, but donations will solicited.
