Karen Olivo Goes West

The Tony Award-nominated star of the Broadway revival of West Side Story sings "America" live and shares her thoughts on working with Arthur Laurents, singing in Spanish, and meeting Chita Rivera!

In just a few short years, Karen Olivo has proven herself to be one of Broadway’s most exciting triple threats — and her talents are on full view as Anita in the Broadway revival of West Side Story, for which she has earned a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Musical. TheaterMania recently caught up with Olivo at the recording session for the show’s new cast album (due out next month by Masterworks Broadway) where she led the company in “America,” and at the annual Tony Awards “Meet the Nominees” event, where we spoke about working with the show’s librettist and director Arthur Laurents, the joys of singing in Spanish, and her meeting with the original Anita, the great Chita Rivera.
