Jonathan Cake, Anna Madeley, Steven Weber to Join Matthew Broderick in Broadway’s The Philanthropist

Full casting has been announced for the Roundabout Theatre Company’s revival of Christopher Hampton’s The Philanthropist, to play the American Airlines Theater April 10-June 28. David Grindley will direct the production, which will open officially on April 26.

The comedy, set in a British university town, centers on Philip, a professor who seems almost absurdly removed from the political turmoil surrounding him, including the assassination of the Prime Minister and his cabinet. Hampton is best known for the play Les Liaisons Dangereuses, for which he received a Tony Award nomination, and an Oscar for the screenplay for the film version, Dangerous Liaisons.

Joining previously announced Tony Award winner Matthew Broderick as Philip will be Jonathan Cake (Braham), Tate Ellington (John), Anna Madeley (Celia), Jennifer Mudge (Araminta), Samantha Soule (Liz), and Steven Weber (Don).

The design team will include Tim Shortall (sets), Tobin Ost (costumes), Rick Fisher (lighting) and Gregory Clarke (sound). Grindley directed the Tony Award-winning Broadway revival of Journey’s End along with a revival of Pygmalion for the Roundabout. He is currently represented on Broadway by Manhattan Theatre Club’s production of Richard Greenberg’s The American Plan.
